Cafe Django is dedicated to the unique spirit of Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli and the Hot Club de France’s famous music from the 30s and 40s. Cafe Django has played various London venues including The Chelsea Arts Club, The Arts Club-Dover Street, Momo’s, Le Quecumbar, L’Escargot-Soho, The National Harmonica League Convention and Brasserie Toulouse Lautrec. It features leading musicians of the style with a five piece band of two guitars, accordion, double bass, harmonica and vocals..often with surprise special guests and sometimes up to an 8 piece. It is one of the world’s few (maybe only) harmonica led gypsy swing bands..Especially with its motto It’s Party Time!!
Peter’s first inspiration was Larry Adler the harmonica virtuoso who recorded 4 tracks with Django and further influenced Peter’s love of gypsy swing jazz. He was invited to play at the Celebration of Larry Adler’s Life and put together a group with the great guitarist Diz Disley who had re-introduced Stephan Grappelli to the UK in the 70s. PG still considers this invitation a huge and almost unworthy honour to be treasured!!
PG says “I now have the privilege to play with some of UK’s best musicians and whilst true to the soul of the music we also love including some blues and good time jazz with the same fervour and integrity as gypsy jazz..which is also natural blues in another form from the planet of the heart! It’s the feeling and commitment that makes it all ring true..so let’s swing and rock and sometimes dance to Le Django!!”
